Recent statistics indicate a global downturn in industrial design applications, with a 3% decline in 2022, the first since 2014. This is echoed in the 2.1% decrease in designs contained within these applications, signaling a trend of cautious retreat from IP filings.
The Hague System’s Role
Despite the general slump, the Hague System remains a significant conduit for non-resident filing activity, claiming one-third of the global share in 2022, a notable increase from the previous year.
African Ingenuity on the Rise
In contrast to the global decrease, African organizations such as the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) showcase remarkable growth rates of 49.4% and 8.8%, respectively.
South Africa’s Noteworthy Performance
South Africa stands out with an 8.9% growth in design count, underscoring the region’s burgeoning role in the IP domain.
Asia Dominates, But Africa Grows
While Asia dominates the filings with a 70.3% share, Africa, though holding a modest 1.1% of the global design application filings, is on an upward trajectory.
The Registration Landscape
Globally, about 1 million industrial design applications were registered in 2022, marking a 5.2% fall from 2021. Yet, growth was observed in several economies, with India, France, Canada, and Turkey seeing sharp increases in registrations.
China’s Pivotal Role
China continues to be pivotal, accounting for over half of all designs in applications registered globally, despite experiencing a decline in registration design count.
