One Tanker a Week: What Oshivela's Water and Solar Model Says to Dryland Farming

On drought-prone ground where water is the binding constraint, a heavy industrial plant uses almost none.

Strip away the iron and Oshivela is a study in doing industry on land that can barely support it. The plant sits on Farm Bloemhof, drought-prone ground bordering the Namib-Naukluft, where water is the binding constraint on any activity, farming included. That it makes iron there at all is a lesson in arid-land resource use.

The numbers are the point. A heavy industrial plant that might be expected to drink rivers instead draws at most a tanker of water a week, trucked in from Arandis some 40 kilometres off, because a sealed kiln recycles what it uses. On land this dry, that discipline is the whole innovation.

Water as the first constraint

In the Erongo interior there is no aquifer to tap and no river to divert, which is exactly the condition that limits agriculture across much of Namibia. Oshivela treats water the way a careful farmer must: as the scarcest input, to be recycled rather than consumed. Its closed-loop kiln reuses process water instead of drawing fresh supply for each tonne.

The contrast with the wider hydrogen sector is instructive. Coastal green-hydrogen schemes plan costly desalination plants to feed their electrolysers, while Oshivela’s inland answer is radical thrift – a weekly tanker and a sealed system. For dryland producers of any kind, that design principle is the transferable idea.

Where water cannot be found, the only supply left is the water already used.

A farmer's plant

The lineage is not incidental. HyIron’s chief executive, Johannes Michels, is a German-Namibian who returned years ago to run the family farming business before turning the land toward iron. The instinct to treat water, land and off-grid power as things to be managed tightly is a farmer’s instinct before it is an industrialist’s.

That background shows in how the site is run – self-supplied, frugal with inputs, built to survive long gaps between deliveries. It is the same operating logic a commercial farm on marginal land already lives by, applied to a kiln instead of a herd.

The plant is run on rules any dryland farmer would recognise.

The microgrid a farm could copy

The energy system is the part agriculture can most directly borrow. Oshivela powers itself from about 44,000 solar panels and a battery of some 13 megawatts, running an industrial load with no grid behind it. The same architecture – solar generation, storage, daytime operation – is what an off-grid farm needs to run pumps, cold storage or processing.

Agritech in Namibia keeps hitting the same wall: productive land with no reliable power. A self-contained renewable microgrid proven at industrial scale is a working reference for irrigation, packhouses and on-farm processing that would otherwise depend on diesel or a distant line.

A plant that farms sunlight for its energy is a template a farm can read.

Sharing a scarce commons

There is a caution alongside the promise. A green-industrial build-out across arid Namibia will compete with agriculture for the same scarce water and land, and not every project will be as frugal as Oshivela claims to be. The plant’s low draw is the standard the sector should be held to, not a guarantee it will meet.

For farmers and rural planners, the sensible posture is to watch the water accounting closely. Industry that recycles and self-powers can sit beside agriculture; industry that drains the commons cannot. Oshivela sets a benchmark worth insisting on.

The land can carry both farm and plant only if each spends water like the last drop.

For an agritech developer, a commercial farmer or a rural planner, Oshivela is less a metals plant than a demonstration of running hard industry on almost no water and no grid. The decision it offers is whether to adopt the same closed-loop, self-powered discipline on the farm – and whether to demand it of every industrial neighbour that wants a share of the same dry ground.
