Water and Rock: Mining Uranium in a Desert That Cannot Spare the Water

The most valuable input at Langer Heinrich is not ore. It is water, in one of the driest places on earth.

The most valuable input at Langer Heinrich is not uranium ore. It is water. The mine that earned N$3.5 billion (about US$208 million) in the nine months to March 2026 does its work in one of the driest places on earth, where every cubic metre it uses is a cubic metre unavailable to anything else that lives on the land.

That makes a uranium mine a water-systems question before it is a minerals one. Paladin Energy reported the sales as a production milestone; in a hyper-arid region, the more searching test is whether high-volume mining can run without drawing down the water on which farming, settlements and ecology all depend.

A desert cannot spend water twice

The Erongo interior receives almost no reliable rainfall, and its water is effectively a fixed, shared resource. Uranium processing is water-intensive, so a mine at volume competes directly with every other claim on that resource – livestock, small-scale farming, and the coastal towns that ring the desert.

This is the sustainability tension in one line. The same output that produced N$3.5 billion also raised the mine’s draw on a resource that does not replenish at the rate a desert economy would need. Value and scarcity move together here.

In the Namib, water spent on ore is water not spent on food, stock or settlement.

Why desalination changes the equation

The regional answer has been to make new water rather than take more of the old. Langer Heinrich draws on NamWater and the Orano desalination supply on the coast, which turns seawater into industrial water and, in principle, spares the inland aquifers that farming and towns rely on.

That is the sustainable design, at least in intent: heavy industrial users fed from the ocean so that finite groundwater is left for uses that cannot be desalinated into existence. A mine on desalinated water is a lighter neighbour to a farm than one on a shared borehole.

Desalination lets a mine grow its water use without deepening the draw on the aquifers farming depends on.

The local economy the mine feeds

Water is not the only way the mine touches the land economy. Langer Heinrich employs about 460 people, 98 percent of them Namibian and almost all living locally, and reported more than N$1.2 billion spent with local and regional suppliers during 2024. Some of that money flows to the food, supply and service businesses of the surrounding region.

For a sustainable local economy, that circulation matters. A mine that buys, hires and provisions locally keeps more of its value on the land it sits on, rather than importing everything and exporting only the profit.

The balance is easier to hold while the mine is careful and the price is high. The risk is that a rising uranium market tempts faster extraction and heavier water use than the region can carry, trading a durable coexistence for a few strong quarters. A food-and-water system in a desert has no slack to give back, so the sustainable target is not maximum output but the level of draw the land and its aquifers can sustain across the mine’s full stated life, not just its best years.

The mine’s local spend helps the land economy only for as long as its water use stays within what the desert can carry.

The stewardship bet

The measure of success here is not tonnes or dollars but whether high-volume mining and a fragile water system can share the same ground over the mine’s stated 17-year life. That is a long-horizon test, and the right one for a semi-arid region where water, not ore, is the binding constraint.

The danger is that the economics of a strong price quietly overrun the ecology of a scarce one. Balance, not maximum extraction, is what keeps the land and the mine viable at the same time.

The mine lasts only as long as its water use stays inside what a desert can renew.

For anyone in agribusiness, water management or conservation finance in Erongo, Langer Heinrich is a test of whether extraction and a fragile water system can coexist: a water-hungry mine in a desert, leaning on desalination to spare the aquifers that farming and settlement need. The decision it poses to the region is whether the water infrastructure can grow with the mine, so that a uranium recovery does not quietly become a water deficit for everyone else on the land.
