The export headline is ammonia for ships. The quieter prize is ammonia for fields, and water for a desert that has neither to spare.
Namibia’s hydrogen strategy is written as an export document, but one of its derivatives has a domestic use older than any energy transition. Green ammonia, the strategy’s flagship product, is also the base of nitrogen fertiliser, and a country that imports most of what it spreads on its fields could, in principle, make it from wind and sun.
That link is already being tested. At the Daures Green Hydrogen Village in the Erongo region, an off-grid plant described in 2022 set out to produce green ammonia and grow food beside it, pairing electrolysis with greenhouses in one of the driest places farming is attempted.
Ammonia for fields, not just ships
About four-fifths of the world’s ammonia becomes fertiliser, so a green-ammonia industry built for export carries an obvious domestic by-product. Namibia imports the bulk of its fertiliser, exposing farmers to global price swings and shipping costs. Producing even a fraction locally would substitute imports and shorten a supply chain that today runs through distant ports and volatile markets.
The Daures pilot makes the point at small scale. Its first phase aimed at roughly 109 tonnes of green ammonia, produced off-grid from solar power, with the fertiliser used on site rather than shipped. The figure is tiny beside export ambitions, but it demonstrates the principle: the same molecule that loads onto a tanker can feed a Namibian field.
The export product and the farmer’s input are the same molecule; only the destination differs.
Water is the binding constraint
Hydrogen is made by splitting water, and Namibia is among the driest countries attempting it. That contradiction sits at the centre of the farming question, because agriculture and electrolysis would compete for the same scarce resource. The strategy’s answer is desalinated seawater on the coast, but moving and treating water inland is costly and energy-hungry.
For farming, the discipline this forces may be its most useful innovation. The Daures project reports recirculating irrigation and high water-use efficiency, treating every litre as expensive because in the Namib it is. Desert horticulture that survives on tightly recycled water is a template with value well beyond hydrogen, in any dry region learning to farm on less.
In the Namib, water discipline is not an environmental nicety but the precondition for growing anything.
The agritech nexus
What makes the model interesting to agritech is the integration. On one site sit renewable power, electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, climate-controlled greenhouses and precision irrigation, each feeding the next. The Daures greenhouses reported growing tomatoes and carrots in commercial quantities, powered and fertilised by the same off-grid system, a closed loop from sunlight to harvest.
This is farming as an engineering system rather than a field. It suits Namibia’s conditions, where open cultivation is marginal but controlled environments can be productive if power and inputs are cheap and local. The innovation is not any single technology but the way the hydrogen build makes the whole loop affordable in a place none of it would otherwise pay.
The advance is the integrated loop, not any one machine within it.
The domestic dividend
For Namibian agriculture the strategy’s value may lie less in export earnings than in what stays home: locally made fertiliser, food grown in the desert, and boreholes and training for nearby communities. The Daures village pledged community gardens and local jobs alongside its plant, framing hydrogen as rural development rather than only industrial export.
The caution is scale and sequencing. Pilots prove concepts; they do not yet feed a nation or replace an import bill. Whether the farming dividend grows depends on the export industry maturing enough to make ammonia cheap domestically, so the field benefits only after the tanker trade pays for the plant.
The farm gains only once the export build makes the molecule cheap at home.
For an agribusiness, a development agency or a farmer weighing the strategy, the signal is that green hydrogen is quietly an agricultural project too: fertiliser, water discipline and controlled-environment food production riding on an energy build. The decision it raises is whether to invest in the farming loop now, as a pilot with local dividends, or wait until export-scale ammonia makes the domestic case pay on its own.
