A desert mine has to be watered and its crews fed. On dry Erongo land, both are food-system questions.

Before Tumas produces a gram of uranium, it has to solve two older problems of the Namib: where the water comes from, and how several hundred workers are fed on land that grows little of its own food. The N$392.6 million (about US$22 million) civil award brings both questions forward, because a build camp of roughly 500 people is a small town to supply.

These are food-system and sustainability questions before they are mining ones. As the award notes, the project is expected to draw in supply, catering and accommodation work – and on arid ground, that demand meets a region already managing scarce water and imported food.

The water behind the concrete

Uranium processing in the Namib runs on water the desert does not have. Tumas is set to draw treated supply through the coastal desalination network rather than deplete groundwater, and Namibia recently advanced a multi-billion-dollar desalination scheme to secure long-term supply for exactly these coastal industrial users.

That reliance frames the sustainability question. A mine that leans on desalinated seawater rather than aquifers protects the scarce groundwater that farming and rural communities depend on, but it ties the project to the cost and energy of moving treated water inland.

In the Namib, sourcing water from the sea is how a mine avoids taking it from the land.

Feeding five hundred on imported ground

Namibia imports much of its food, and the arid coast produces little at scale. Feeding a construction camp of about 500 means a steady supply of provisions, catering and logistics – a recurring demand that can either be met from Namibian suppliers or trucked in from outside the region and the country.

The food-system opportunity is to route that spend through Namibian farmers, wholesalers and caterers where the produce and capacity exist. The constraint is real: a country carrying elevated food insecurity cannot pretend a desert region will suddenly grow its own supply, so the gain lies in local sourcing and handling, not local growing.

The camp cannot be fed off the land it sits on, only off the supply chain that reaches it.

An arid region under pressure

Context sharpens the point. Namibia has been contending with severe drought and rising food insecurity, though Erongo sits among the less affected regions. Adding a large, well-paid workforce to a dry area lifts local demand for food and water and can strain small-town supply if it is not planned for.

Handled well, that demand supports local traders and transporters. Handled poorly, it prices basics beyond residents or leans on scarce water, which is the tension any large project on marginal land has to manage rather than wish away.

A well-paid camp can lift a town’s traders or strain its supply – planning decides which.

The sustainability bet

The durable test is whether Tumas can run on desalinated water and sourced food without degrading the arid systems around it. That means holding water use to the treated supply it has contracted, and building procurement that draws on Namibian food chains rather than defaulting to imports for convenience.

These are long-horizon measures, and they suit a semi-arid economy better than headline job counts. A mine that supplies itself sustainably leaves the surrounding land and water no worse than it found them; one that does not exports its costs to the region.

The land bears a desert mine only if its water and food demands are met from outside, not extracted.

For anyone in agribusiness, food logistics or resource sustainability, Tumas is a study in how a desert project feeds and waters itself without draining the region. The decision it frames is whether to build the local food-supply and desalinated-water arrangements deliberately, so a large arid-zone workforce strengthens the surrounding economy instead of straining it.
