Ammonia is the molecule behind most of the world's fertiliser. Hyphen is building millions of tonnes of it to leave.
There is a quiet irony in a fertiliser project that plans to feed everyone but Namibia first. Hyphen’s green ammonia is chemically the same molecule that underpins most nitrogen fertiliser on Earth, and the plant will make it by the million tonnes, yet the project is built for export, primarily to Europe, not for the fields of the Karas region.
That is the food-systems question hidden inside a hydrogen story. A country that imports its fertiliser and worries about food security is about to manufacture the raw material of fertiliser at scale, on its own coast, and ship most of it away. What, if anything, does a Namibian farmer get from the plant next door.
The molecule that feeds the world
Ammonia is unglamorous and central. It is the feedstock from which most nitrogen fertiliser is made, and Hyphen plans to produce one million tonnes a year from 2028, rising toward two million by 2030. Made with renewable power rather than natural gas, it is the same product a fertiliser plant would want as its starting point.
The catch for local food systems is direction. The project is structured around export offtake, so the default path for that ammonia is a ship, not a Namibian fertiliser works. The molecule that could ease an import bill is being built to become someone else’s import.
The fertiliser of the future is being made here and addressed elsewhere.
A smaller project answers the food question
Namibia has already shown what the domestic version looks like, and it is not Hyphen. At the Daures Green Hydrogen Village in the Erongo region, a small solar-and-wind plant makes green ammonia for fertiliser and grows vegetables hydroponically in the desert, targeting 100 tonnes of ammonia and 500 tonnes of food a year and food security for more than 1,000 people locally.
Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe has said that project intends to meet Namibia’s own fertiliser demand before exploring export. That is the opposite sequencing to Hyphen, and it marks the choice the country is quietly making about who its hydrogen feeds first.
One project exports the molecule; another keeps it home – Namibia is running both bets.
Water is the quieter dividend
The more immediate farming benefit may not be ammonia at all, but water. To run, Hyphen must desalinate seawater on a dry coast, and the company plans to supply fresh water to the Luderitz area, which is currently water-scarce. In an arid region, a new, reliable freshwater source is an agricultural asset in its own right, whatever the ammonia does.
The open question is allocation. Desalinated water built for an industrial process is expensive, and whether any of it reaches smallholders or local food production rather than the plant alone is a decision about priorities, not engineering. For a semi-arid commons, that decision matters as much as the tonnage.
On this coast, the freshwater the plant makes may feed more people than the ammonia it ships.
Stewardship on fragile land
The sustainability ledger runs both ways. The plant sits inside the Tsau //Khaeb National Park, a Succulent Karoo hotspot with roughly 1,050 plant species – close to a quarter of Namibia’s flora – on a sliver of its land, and industrial works in that setting carry a real conservation cost even at under 3% disturbance.
Against that sits the climate case: the project is projected to avoid five to six million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by displacing fossil ammonia abroad. A food-systems reading has to hold both – a global emissions gain and a local stewardship burden – and judge the balance on the ground, not the brochure.
The land carries a local cost for a global gain; balance, not maximisation, is the sustainable target.
For anyone in agribusiness, food policy or conservation, Hyphen poses a sharper question than jobs or exports: whether a fertiliser molecule and a freshwater stream built for foreign markets can be turned, even partly, toward Namibian food security. The decision for policymakers is whether to negotiate a domestic share of the water and the ammonia now, or let the country’s own food-system dividend sail past its coast.
